Latar belakang dan tujuan: Embrio lembaga yang berdiri pada 10 Oktober 1990 ini dimulai sejak 1987, berangkat dari keprihatinan terhadap kondisi sosial dan ekonomi keluarga miskin di pedesaan dan perkotaan. Keber­hasilan revolusi hijau memberikan dampak surplus tenaga kerja di kalangan masyarakat petani. Di sisi lain, terjadi penyem­pitan lahan pertanian sehingga mengakibatkan pengang­guran, penurunan tingkat pendapatan keluarga, pertambahan angka putus sekolah dan urbanisasi. Tujuan lembaga ini adalah mem­perluas kesempatan kerja melalui pengembangan kerajinan, meningkat­kan pendapatan dan kesejahteraan pengrajin kecil, mendorong tumbuhnya jaringan kerja produksi dan pemasaran kerajinan rakyat produk pengrajin kecil, serta mendorong tum­buhnya jaringan kerja permodalan antara lembaga ini dan pengrajin.
Bidang dan bentuk kegiatan: Bidang kegiatan utama adalah gender, usaha kecil dan perkoperasian serta pemasaran dan pengembangan pengrajin, yang ditunjang gender dan ling­kungan hidup. Bentuk kegiatan utama adalah pendidikan dan pelatihan, pengem­bangan dan pendampingan masyarakat, serta pemasaran. Sementara bentuk kegiatan penunjang adalah penerbitan dan publikasi serta perkreditan.
Program: Beberapa kegiatan yang pernah dilakukan, dan layak pasar, pendampingan pengrajin, dan pameran handicraft.
Publikasi: Menerbitkan buletin Semar.
Sumber dana: Selain dari bantuan berupa subsidi pemerintah (PT Pos dan Giro, Departemen Perindustrian dan Perdagangan), juga hibah lembaga-lembaga internasional (OXFAM dan USAID), bantuan badan-badan dalam negeri non pemerintah (USC, YAPIKA, dan OXFAM), serta pendapatan dari jasa kerja sama dengan pihak lain.
Keanggotaan dan wilayah kerja: Di tingkat regional, tergabung dalam Kadinda dan ASEPHI, juga masuk dalam Forum LSM/LPSM DIY. Pada tingkat nasional menjadi anggota Konsorsium Fair Trade serta PLIP Mitra Wacana.
Staf: Lembaga ini mempunyai 18 orang staf tetap dan 3 orang staf tidak tetap. Dilihat dari fungsinya, ada 7 orang tenaga profesional dan 7 orang staf administrasi.

Background and purpose: The embryo of the foundation, which was founded on 10 October 1990, came up in 1987. incited by the concerns about the social and economic condition of poor families in rural and urban areas. All this resulted in unemployment, a fall in family incomes, an increase in the number of students dropping out from schools who then moved to find jobs in urban areas. Nearly similar situation was faced by low-income earning families in urban areas. Against this backdrop, APIKRI aims to increase job opportunities by developing craft industries; increasing of the income and welfare of small craftsmen; encouraging the growth of networks for producing and marketing craft industrial items; and encouraging the growth of capital networks between APIKRI and craftsmen.
Area and form of activities: APIKRI’s main fields of activity are gender, small enterprises and cooperatives, and the marketing of craft industrial products and the development of artisans. Meanwhile, its supporting fields of activities are gender and environment. The forms of the main fields of activity are education and training, community development and facilitation, pu­blication and credit provision.
Program: Aside from the construction of buildings and their facilities, activities carried out by Yayasan APIKRI were exhibitions of export products, contests of the creation of tradable craft industrial products, facilitation of craftsmen, and handicraft expose.
Publication: The foundation periodically publishes Semar bulletin.
Funding sources: APIKRI gets subsidy funds from the govern­ment (PT Pos dan Giro, Ministry of Industry and Trade), and grants from international funding agencies (OXFAM and USAID), and assistance funds from domestic non-government organizat­ions like USC, YAPIKA and OXFAM, and also from the remuner­ation of projects APIKRI carries out together with other parties.
Membership and working area: The foundation is associated with Kadinda (provincial office of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and ASEPHI. Also, it is a member of Yogyakarta’s NGOS Forum. At the national level, APIKRI is a member of the Consortium of Fair Trade, and PLIP Mitra Kencana.
Staff: APIKRI has 18 full-time and 3 part-time staff members. According to their function, they include 7 professional and 7 administration workers.
