Latar belakang dan tujuan: Semangat yang melandasi berdirinya WALHI pada 15 Oktober 1981 adalah perlindungan fungsi lingkungan, keadilan eksploitasi lingkungan untuk masyarakat luas, dan memperhatikan kesejahteraan generasi mendatang. Tujuannya adalah mendorong tercapainya proses pembangunan yang meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat rentan tanpa menimbulkan dampak negatif, serta mensosialisasikan demokratisasi di Indonesia melalui pembangunan kesadaran berwawasan lingkungan.
Bidang dan bentuk kegiatan: Bidang-bidang kegiatan utama lembaga ini adalah lingkungan hidup, hak asasi manusia, demokrasi, pembangunan perkotaan, hutan kemasyarakatan, kelautan dan perikanan, yang ditunjang bidang kesehatan, hukum, sektor informal, dan anak. Kegiatan-kegiatan ini dilaksanakan terutama dalam bentuk studi, penelitian, survai, pendidikan dan pelatihan, pengembangan dan pendampingan masyarakat, penerbitan, advokasi, dan seminar.
Program: Secara umum program-program yang dilakukan adalah pendidikan rakyat, sejumlah kegiatan advokasi, dan studi-studi misalnya studi kebakaran hutan.
Publikasi: Menerbitkan buku, buletin Environmental Lawyer Club, dan Jurnal Tanah Air.
Sumber dana: Selain iuran dan sumbangan anggota, lembaga ini memperoleh bantuan dari sejumlah lembaga antara lain LPPS, NOVIB, CARE, OXFAM, USAID, NCOS, CIDA, FOE, Yayasan KEHATI, dan DML.
Keanggotaan dan wilayah kerja: Lembaga ini masuk dalam jaringan ADB, ANGOC, JAPHAMA, INFID, KP-SHK, I-CAN, AKPP, ELC, JATAM, FOE, CANSEA, ELCI, E-LAW. Wilayah kerjanya meliputi 23 propinsi di Indonesia, kecuali Timor Timur, Maluku, dan Jambi.
Staf: Lembaga ini mempunyai 25 staf profesional dan 4 staf administrasi.
Background and purpose: The spirit behind the establishment of WALHI on 15 October 1981 was protection of the functions of the environment, justice in the exploitation of the environment for the society at large, and attention for the welfare of future generations. The purposes of WALHI are encourage development processes for the improvement of the welfare of the poor and weak people without causing negative impacts; and socializing democratization in Indonesia by developing people’s awareness about the importance of environment protection.
Area and form of activities: WALHI’s main fields of activity are environment, human rights, democracy, urban development, community forest, and marine development and fishery. The fields of healthcare, law, informal sector, and children support them. Activities in these fields are carried out mainly in the forms of study, research, survey, education and training, community development and facilitation, publication, advocacy and seminar.
Program: In general, the programs carried out by WALHI are people education, advocacy activities, studies like the study of forest fire.
Publication: WALHI publishes books, Environmental Lawyers Club bulletin, and Tanah Air journal.
Funding sources: Aside from the dues and contributions from its members, the funds used by WALHI for its activities come from the assistance provided by a number organizations like LPPS, NOVIB, CARE, OXFAM, USAID, NCOS, CIDA, POE, Yayasan KEHATI, and DML.
Membership and working area: WALHI is a member of several networks like ADB, ANGOC, JAPHAMA, INFID, KP-SHK, AKPP, ELC, JATAM, FOE, CANSEA, ELCI, and E-LAW. It operates in 23 provinces, and the provinces not covered are East Timor, Maluku and Jambi.
Staff: 25 professional and 4 administration staff members run the organization.
